How To Give a Firm Handshake

Step 1: Confidentially approach

Walk up to the person you're greeting to while maintaining eye contact with a nice smile. This will show anyone a good impression no matter who it is. It is also beneficial when you introduce yourself in at any interview.

Step 2: Hand Positioning

Aim for the web of skin between your thumb and index finger to meet theirs. This ensures a solid and gentle grip for both you and that person.

Step 3: Firm Grip

Now, for the most important crucial part – Apply an equivalent amount of grip pressure for you and that person without overdoing it. You want to convey confidence, not crush their hand like you in an arm wrestling challenge. You don’t want to dismantle their whole wrist and forearm that can kill your impression for sure.

Step 4: Two to Three Shakes

Give the handshake two to three gentle up-and-down movements while maintaining eye contact and a smile once again. Again, this is not some tug of war so try not to pull the person’s arm out his/her body. Maybe 4 and 5 gentle up and downs will still be fine but more than that can give both of you an awkward moment, especially over a regular handshake.

Step 5: Release Gracefully

End the handshake smoothly without any abrupt movements. That will show nervousness towards the person you just gave a handshake to.
